Anantapur police arrested two men from Karnataka allegedly involved in property offences and recovered stolen property worth ₹70 lakh, including gold and silver ornaments from them.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Jagadeesh said the accused Yadavalli Manju and P. Ramadasu, both hailing from Bellary in Karnataka, were friends and addicted to liquor, cricket betting, gambling and other vices. They planned to earn easy money and decided to commit property offences including chain snatchings, thefts and burglaries at locked houses.
According to the police, the accused travelled to Anantapur, Tadipatri, Gooty, and nearby places on two-wheelers, selected isolated areas and targeted solo travellers and snatched gold ornaments from them. Similarly, they used to travel in buses and steal luggage and other valuables of passengers. They also used to break into locked houses.
The accused would then sell the stolen valuables to meet their expenses, the SP said. Mr Jagadeesh said the duo were involved in similar cases in Bellary and Guntur earlier.
