Ahead of Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan’s visit to Rameswaram on December 30, security was intensified in the coastal district on Sunday.
Officials said the Vice-President was expected to participate in the valedictory of Kasi Sangamam celebration, which began at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, at Rameswaram.
Kasi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 was held from December 2 to 15 in Varanasi. It brought together students, academicians, artists, writers, and cultural practitioners from across the country. The programme celebrated the deep-rooted cultural, spiritual, linguistic, and philosophical linkages between Tamil Nadu and Kasi, reaffirming India’s civilisational unity and shared heritage.
Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthiran hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organising the Kasi Tamil Sangamam as it had helped recall the connect between the two heritage towns from time immemorial.
Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and L Murugan and IIT-Madras Director V. Kamakoti, among others, would also address the event, officials said.
In view of the meeting, police said surveillance had been stepped up in the district, and that the Vice-President was likely to reach Mandapam helipad by a defence helicopter from Madurai.
