A six-year-old boy was run over by a lorry on the Chennai-Madurai bypass near Panjapur bus stand in the city on Sunday. Police identified the victim as P. Mithran of South Sethurapatti in Manikandam near Tiruchi.
Police said Mithran was travelling on a scooter driven by his mother P. Ponnumani when the lorry hit the two-wheeler from behind. The woman and her son fell on the road and the lorry ran over the boy causing his death on the spot. The woman escaped narrowly.
The body of the victim was sent to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital here for autopsy. The lorry driver has been named as the accused. The Traffic South Investigation unit has registered a case.
