The movement of a tiger near the closed Medipalli opencast mine in Ramagundam-I area of Peddapalli district triggered panic among residents of the habitations dotting the coal belt. The tiger is believed to have crossed over into the coal belt of Peddapalli district through Mancherial district from the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district a few days ago.
The Forest department stepped up vigil in the areas abutting the Medipalli opencast mine after the field staff reportedly spotted pugmarks of a tiger near a graveyard at Lingapur village on Sunday.
According to Forest Department sources, special teams have been deployed to track the tiger’s movement.
An awareness campaign has been launched in Lingapur and its adjoining villages to sensitise local residents to strictly adhere to the safety precautions to prevent human-animal conflict and ensure safe passage for the big cat into its natural habitat.
