Amid heavy security, idols of Lord Vinayaka were taken out in a procession and immersed in Cauvery River on Wednesday.

Tiruchi City Police had mobilised over 1,000 personnel for the idol procession conducted on the third day of Vinayaka Chaturthi. Police teams were deployed at vantage points across the city to monitor the movement of the processions and to prevent any untoward incidents.

Idols of varied sizes and hues were brought to the Cauvery in a procession on notified routes in a slow and steady manner and immersed in the river. Some idols installed on the outskirts of the city were also immersed in the Cauvery, said police sources.

Barricades were placed along the Cauvery bridge to regulate the movement of the processions and the public. The processions that began in the evening in the city went on for several hours. The police had announced diversion of city and town buses and heavy vehicles in connection with the immersion.
