As Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple consecration drew massive crowds, Madurai City Police and civic authorities rolled out comprehensive security, traffic, parking, and emergency management plans to streamline the influx of devotees.
To regulate movement around the temple area, strict public entry and exit routes were established. Devotees who arrived from North Avani Moola Street were directed through Keezh Pattamar Street, East Mela Pattamar Street, North Gopura Street, and Thiyagi Thayammal Street to enter North Chithirai Street via West and South Gopurams.
Designated paths were marked for those approaching from West and South Avani Moola Streets. For departure, the public exit routes channelled crowds through East Chithirai Street, Meenakshi Park, Naveen Bakery, Kunnathur Sathiram Main Gate, Haji Moosa parking lane, Amman Sannathi Street, and past the temple check post, with East Rajagopuram acting as the main exit and Amman Sannathi Gopuram designated for emergencies.
An extensive parking framework was implemented across multiple zones, categorised for VIPs, vehicle pass holders, and general visitors. Dedicated lots included slots adjacent to the temple, single-sided parking along South and West Masi streets, spaces within prominent commercial establishments, multi-level facilities at Periyar Bus Stand, and expansive grounds across Marret Street, West Veli Street, and South River Bed.
Large-scale bus parking was provisioned on Old RTO Road, Seethakathi Salai, and designated school and college grounds. Inside the perimeter, extensive public amenities were set up to help visitors.
Security infrastructure featured 26 specialised cellphone deposit racks at all five gopurams, capable of holding over 15,000 devices, alongside free footwear deposit centres, luggage storage rooms, and special mother-feeding facilities near Vinayagar Sannathi.
A robust deployment of medical and rescue teams operated across 10 designated sectors. Medical posts, staffed by doctors, nurses, and assistants, were established near all major temple towers and key intersections, backed by a fleet of ambulances and bike ambulances.
A specialised fire and rescue fleet, including heavy water tenders, collapsible tanks, rescue tenders with extension ladders, and generator trucks, were strategically positioned throughout the city with round-the-clock official coordination, said officials.
Crowd surge
Speaking at a press conference after the ceremony, Minister for Energy Resources and Law C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar mentioned about an unexpected surge of devotees inside barricaded zones. Although general attendees were originally scheduled to be permitted entry only after 10:00 a.m., large crowds eager to witness the event live had gathered at every entrance, he said, adding: “They began pushing through barricades to gain quick entry into the temple, which caused minor commotions at a few places.”
After he personally intervened, the crowds calmed down. “To prevent over-congestion at the waiting spots, we made spot decisions to allow sections of the crowd inside at some pressure points,” he added. As this temporary move caused some confusion among the devotees regarding routes, the entries were halted immediately, he added.
“Though people complained about being stopped, it is for their own good and safety. Once we explained the situation, they maintained order,” he said.
