The Regional Metereological Centre has forecast rain in 14 districts, including Tiruchi, Thanjvaur, Ariyalur and Nagapattinam, on September 20 and 21.

A north-south trough extending till Gulf of Mannar is set to bring scattered rainfall across various districts of the State, with heavy spells likely over north and interior Tamil Nadu for the next few days. The wet weather is likely to relieve the State from oppressive summer-like heat conditions from Sunday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has, however, noted the developing low pressure area may not have any direct impact over the State in terms of water storage. Officials of the RMC said the trough across T.N. would largely trigger wet weather over various parts of the State till September 25.
On Sunday and Monday, 15 districts, including Nilgiris, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Tiruchi, and Madurai, are likely to receive heavy rainfall in isolated places along with gusty winds reaching speed of 40-50 kmph.
A total of 14 other districts across the State, including Chennai, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Erode, and Nagapattinam, may experience moderate rainfall and other places in the State may have light rainfall till Monday.
Various places in north and delta districts, including Chennai, Villupuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam, may come under the path of rain-bearing system till September 25.
On Saturday, Palayamkottai recorded the highest day temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. Several weather stations, including Chennai, recorded above normal temperatures. Places, including Valparai, Kodaikanal, Namakkal, and Madurai, received light to moderate rainfall till Saturday evening.
V.R. Durai, Head, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, RMC, said the increase in cloud cover and rainfall would maintain temperatures close to normal in most parts of the State till September 23. The prevailing southwesterly wind pattern would aid in wind convergence and rainfall.
Though the developing low pressure area may reach intensity of a deep depression over West-Central Bay of Bengal, it may not strengthen into a cyclone this season. It may not have much impact over T.N. as it is forming far away and likely to move northwestwards.
Meanwhile, the Southwest monsoon started retreating from West Rajasthan on Saturday. The wet spell over the State for the next few days is expected to narrow the rain deficit, which currently stands at 23%, he said.
