The first phase of the 2025 wetland bird census held over the weekend came to a close on Sunday (December 28, 2025) at Gudalur Forest Division in the Nilgiris.
The Forest Department said in a press release that it conducts two annual bird census – the wetland and terrestrial bird census. Training for the wetland bird census was held on Friday (December 26, 2025) at the Nadugani Reserve Forest in Genepool on the orders of the Divisional Forest Officer, Vengatesh Prabhu. A total of 60 forest staff and 25 volunteers participated in the training.
“Training was given on how to conduct the bird census, and how to record the birds. Following this, a wetland bird census was conducted at 21 locations in the Gudalur Forest Range,” the press release added.
