The police on Wednesday (September 23) arrested a woman from Kuniyamuthur on charge of murdering a 54-year-old neighbour.
K. Vijayalakshmi (42), who was running an idli shop along with her husband, was arrested for murdering M. Vijayalakshmi, a resident of Vetrilaikarar Street at Kuniyamuthur.
Vijayalakshmi (deceased) was residing alone after the demise of her husband. She used to receive her meals either from her daughter’s home or from the nearby idli shop run by the accused. She was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence on September 15.
The Kuniyamuthur police launched an investigation and the post-mortem examination revealed that the woman had been murdered. The police found that a two-sovereign gold chain was missing from the house. The investigators also found that pieces of broken bangles collected by the forensic team from the crime scene did not belong to the deceased.
The police examined visuals from surveillance cameras and found that idli shop owner Vijayalakshmi visited the house on the day of the murder. The police questioned the woman, who confessed to having committed the murder and stolen the gold chain. Bangles of the accused, which broke during the struggle, had fallen on the floor, eventually leading the police to her, officers involved in the investigation said.
The police recovered the stolen chain after arresting the accused, who was remanded in judicial custody.
