The city police have arrested a 39-year-old woman for allegedly cheating an investor of ₹23 lakh by promising monthly returns of up to 30% through a bogus investment scheme.

According to the police, the accused, Pooja Jain of Park Town, was introduced to the complainant, Hema Priyadarshini, 40, through a relative in 2024. Persuaded by Pooja to invest in “IBL Bond”, Hema issued a cheque for ₹15 lakh in favour of IBL & Co. After receiving interest for a few months, she invested another ₹8 lakh in March 2025.

When the interest payments stopped, Jain told her that the company had suffered losses. Hema subsequently lodged a complaint with the West Zone Cyber Crime Police, who registered a case on August 22.

The police said Jain, employed as a relationship manager in private banks since 2019, had obtained customer details while discussing investments and loans. She created a website using the domain “INDIABONDSLIMITED” and approached customers with promises of 25%-30% returns.

The police also said that she opened accounts in the name of the fictitious entity “IBL & Co.”, deposited cheques received from the victims, and transferred the funds to her personal accounts. Investigators found that she used her laptop to create fake investment bonds and send them to victims.

Pooja had previously faced cheating cases registered against her at the Nungambakkam and Kolathur police stations and by the Central Crime Branch. She was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. Police are searching for other accused persons.
