The theatre groups of Shivamogga on Friday conducted day-long activities to mark the World Theatre Day. The activities included a presentation of theatre songs, a theatre walk, folk dance, a competition of skits and staging of plays.

The day began with the rendition of theatre songs at Ravindra Nagar Park in the city. The theatre-lovers and walkers gathered for the programme. A group of singers led by Thanmayi, Vijay Ninasam and others presented popular theatre songs, including those composed by B.V. Karanth.

As many as 10 teams participated in the skit competition held at Kuvempu Rangamandira. Each team was given 10 minutes to stage their skit, and the winners received cash prizes. Many, including schoolchildren, took part in the competition.

A special theatre walk from Shivappa Nayaka Circle to Kuvempu Rangamandira was taken out to illustrate the devastating impacts of war on ordinary lives. The participants including students of Sahyadri College were dressed to represent war’s victims. They carried their bags and walked with no hope left on their faces. Some of them had bandages wrapped around to depict those wounded in wars. G.R. Lava, a faculty member at Sahyadri College, had formed the march.

The students of NES Institute of Advanced Studies in Shivamogga and Government First Grade College of Shivamogga staged plays.

Rangayana Shivamogga director Prasanna D. Sagar, Kalavidaru Okkuta president Kantesh Kadaramandalagi, secretary Honnali Chandrashekhar and others participated in the programmes.
