Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna launched the ‘free left turn’ civil work project at Kalsanka Junction on Monday. This project aims to widen the culvert, built on the Indrani rivulet, facilitating a free left turn from Udupi city towards Ambagilu.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone, Mr. Suvarna said the City Municipal Council (CMC) would execute the project at an estimated cost of ₹49 lakh. He said there had been, for a long time, the pending demand for a ‘free left turn’ towards Ambagilu to ensure the free flow of traffic on the Udupi-Manipal portion of Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway 169A.
The CMC has now provided funds for the work, he said, adding that it would be completed soon, thereby ensuring reduced vehicle congestion at Kalsanka Junction.
Over the years, a traffic bottleneck was created at Kalsanka Junction, with the number of vehicles plying within and out of Udupi city increasing considerably. Besides being a key interface between Udupi and Manipal, the junction also provided access to the Sri Krishna Mutt Parking lot.
Former CMC president Prabhakar Poojary, former councillors, and others were present.
