Carnatic music is in safe hands with talented young performers taking an increasing interest in the classical tradition, veteran vocalist N. Vijay Siva said on Sunday.

Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony of the annual music competition organised by the Indian Fine Arts Society at Ethiraja Kalyana Nilayam in Alwarpet, Mr. Siva said such initiatives were important to sustain and promote India’s classical arts and culture.

Mr. Siva, who presented prizes to the winners, recalled participating in the same competition in the 1980s. He urged the young participants to value the friendships they formed during competitions. “More than participation and prizes, remember the friendships you cultivate with other competing children forever,” he said. recalling that his own friendships with musicians such as Neyveli Santhanagopalan and Sanjay Subrahmanyan began during their early years.
