Jr Fed Cup | Murad takes the spotlight with new MR on final day

Murad Sirman set a new meet record twice in a single day en route winning the 400m hurdles on the final day of the 23rd National Junior Federation Cup athletics championships at the Madan Mohan Malviya Sports Stadium at Prayagraj on Tuesday.

Gujarat’s Sirman, participating in his first competition for the year, clocked 50.75 seconds, finished more than 1.5 seconds and almost 15 metres ahead of second-placed Karnataka’s Bhushan Patil.

Sirman bettered Durgesh Kumar Pal’s previous record (51.76 seconds, 2012) in the semifinals with a timing of 51 seconds before doing it again in the evening.

Also setting a new meet record was Anushka Yadav of Uttar Pradesh, continuing her impressive form to throw 60.46 metres for gold in the hammer throw and adding to her junior National record set in February.

J. Pandiyan (21.33s) and Dhesikha V. (24.44s) completed the 200m double for Tamil Nadu, both clocking personal best timings. Bhavya Pilania, from Bangaon and a trainee at JSWs academy there, managed 47.64m for the javelin throw gold. Rajasthan’s Dipesh Choudhary took the men’s gold with 72.98m.

(TN, 24.44s), 400mH: Tanu Chaudhary (NCOE Pat, 1:01.09), 800m: Prateeksha Yadav (UP, 2:07.89), 5000m: Priyanka Oksa (NJC, 17:07.09), 3000m SC: Sakshi Borhade (Mah, 10:50.39), Triple jump: Sadhana Ravi (12.75m), Hammer throw: Anushka Yadav (UP, 60.46m), Javelin throw: Bhavya Pilania (JSW, 47.65m), Heptathlon: Sriteja Tholem (Tel, 4735 pts).
