Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena has approved a proposal to link police stations with hospitals to ensure quicker and more efficient medical and forensic support to victims involved in cases such as rape, road accidents, and other emergencies that require immediate medico-legal intervention, a Raj Niwas official said on Friday.

The approval follows a collaboration between Delhi Police and the Delhi government’s departments of Home and Health and Family Welfare.

The Delhi government had created a committee to analyse and recommend optimal coordination between police stations and hospitals to eliminate delays in urgent treatment and preparing medico-legal case reports, the official said. Following this, a draft notification outlining the redistribution was vetted by the government’s Law Department.

The L-G approved the proposal under Section 194(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which outlines specific circumstances under which a police officer must forward a body for examination by a medical professional.
