A 28-year-old woman ward councillor and a functionary of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) was stabbed to death in Thirunindravur by three persons, including her husband and his brother, on Thursday night.
The police arrested the three men on charges of murder and remanded them to judicial custody.
The victim is Gomathi, 28, who was the 26th ward councillor of Thirunindravur muncipality and also chairman of the taxation appeal committee. Her husband A. Stephan Raj, 34, is town secretary of the VCK. They married 10 years ago and have four children.
Police sources said she was staying at her relative’s house recently, following a quarrel with her husband. She was seen talking with her male friend at 9 p.m. on Thursday, near a rice mill in Nadukutthagai. After seeing her, Stephen Raj’s brother A. Ajith and his friend Johnson assaulted her and the male friend fled the scene. Later, Stephen Raj also reached the spot after receiving information from his brother. They pushed her into an auto and took her to their house.
As she resisted their attempt and picked up a quarrel, Stephen Raj stabbed her to death using a knife. Police said they received information that the body of a woman was lying near Thirunindravur. They sent the body to a government hospital for post-mortem. Police registered a case and began investigation.
Police arrested Stephen Raj, Ajith, 25 and Johnson, 25. The accused were arrested within a few hours of having committed the crime, said police.
