Hollywood actor David Corenswet, who is set to don the red cape in the upcoming Superman film, has revealed that he sought words of wisdom from former Superman actors Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin on how to play the part.

At the London premiere of the James Gunn film, Corenswet told Heart that he wrote letters to Cavill — who played the superhero in DCEU films such as Man of Steel (2013) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) — and Hoechlin — the CW Superman who appeard in series such as Supergirl, The Flash and Superman & Lois — asking them for advice.

“I had the pleasure of exchanging letters with two previous Supermans, Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin. They were very encouraging, and we had a lovely exchange, and I’m excited to meet them one day. It’ll be great when we can all get in a room together,” he said.

“Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try to give you any tips.’ And I think that’s a very Superman thing — Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be. They really just conveyed to me encouragement and a sense of, you know, have fun with it. Which I think is Superman’s way of doing it too,” added Corenswet.

Superman, set to take flight in theatres on July 11, features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Matamorpho and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, among others. The Hammer of Boravia and Ultraman too make appearances.

The cast of the film also features Skyler Gisondo (as Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer). María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk and Neva Howell also feature in the film.

DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn produce the film, which has a screenplay written by Gunn. The director is joined by his frequent collaborators for the technical side of things: director of photography Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky and composer John Murphy, along with editors William Hoy, Jason Ballantine and Craig Alpert.
