A day after a 55-year-old resident was mauled to death by a neighbourhood pet dog, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) warned pet owners to take their dogs to public places only with collars, leashes, and muzzles, and to obtain licences from the Corporation while ensuring their pets are vaccinated against rabies.
If dogs are found roaming or taken out without muzzles in houses, streets, parks, or crowded areas, strict action will be taken against their owners. Such cases will also be dealt with in accordance with the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India, a Corporation release said.
Owners are permitted to take only one pet at a time to public places, and the dog must be both muzzled and leashed. Only licensed and vaccinated dogs are allowed in public. If dogs are allowed to threaten or attack people in public spaces, the owners will face action under relevant guidelines and applicable criminal laws, the release further said.
