The Puducherry leadership of INDIA bloc on Monday decided to extend support to the nation-wide general strike, called by trade unions on July 9, against the labour policies of the NDA government at the Centre.
The decision was taken at a meeting held by the leaders of the India bloc at the office of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday.
CPI secretary A.M. Saleem said the BJP government had codified the laws at the “behest” of corporate houses to curb trade union activities and curtail the rights of workers.
The Centre had failed to consider the demands of trade unions to fix minimum wages as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court and Indian Labour Conference, he said.
“The Puducherry government is also ignoring the interest of workers. Hundreds of workers have lost their jobs due to the closure of government undertakings and societies. They have not received their wages for years. Hence, INDIA bloc parties have decided to extend support for the strike,” he said.
Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and PCC chief V. Vaithilingam, Puducherry DMK convenor and Opposition leader R. Siva, and Puducherry CPI(M) secretary S. Ramachandran were among those who attended the meeting.
