A 21-year-old daily wage labourer set himself on fire after attacking his cousin with a toilet cleaner for turning down his marriage proposal at Bashettihalli, in the outskirts of Chikkaballapura, on Tuesday.
The deceased, Anand Kumar, sustained 80% burns, and later succumbed in the hospital, while the victim, a BCA student, escaped with minor injuries on her face and body. She is being treated at the hospital, the police said .
According to the police, the deceased worked as a daily-wage labourer in Chintamani, and was the maternal uncle of the victim. The victim turned down his marriage proposal as she wanted to pursue further studies. Investigation revealed that the family had decided about their marriage a decade ago, but it was cancelled as the girl shifted to Chikkaballapura for her studies.
Sensing that the girl was distancing herself from him, Kumar demanded that their marriage be conducted immediately. However, the girl’s family asked him to wait until she finishes her studies, which triggered his actions.
Scared by the attack, the victim raised an alarm, following which, Kumar set himself on fire.The Chikkaballapura police have registered a case of suicide and assault against the deceased for further investigation.
