The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday ordered issue of notice to the State and the Central governments on a petition seeking direction to the authorities to consider a representation to name a cable-stayed bridge, built across the Sharavati connecting Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli villages in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district, as “B.S. Yediyurappa” bridge.
Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav passed the order on a petition filed by 84-year-old K. Haranatha Rao from Shivamogga district.
The petitioner has said that he has given a representation to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on July 7 requesting them to name the new bridge, which is scheduled to be inaugurated on July 14, as “B.S. Yediyurappa” bridge considering the contribution of Mr. Yediyurappa to the State as Chief Minister.
Also, the petitioner has sought a direction from the court to restrain the authorities from naming the bridge till consideration of his representation.
The bridge, with a length of 2,140 metres and having a 11-m wide carriageway with two lanes, has been built at a cost of ₹456.67 crore and provides easy access to Sigandur temple, a pilgrimage centre. At present the locals are calling it as “Sigandur bridge” identifying it with the temple as thousands of devotees visit this temple from various parts of the State.
