A lorry that was carrying around 30 tonnes of wooden logs overturned on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) at Vettuvanam village near Pallikonda toll plaza in Vellore on Thursday.
Police said that lorry driver G. Nayagan, 34, a native of Ambur, was driving from Mangalore in Karnataka to Chennai with the consignment around 1.30 a.m. when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle and hit the sidewall of the bridge under construction on the stretch.
In the impact, the lorry overturned, affecting traffic movement on the route. Immediately, other motorists alerted Pallikonda police, who rushed to the spot. Wooden logs that got scattered on the carriageway were removed before traffic was restored on the stretch over two hours later. The lorry driver sustained minor injuries and was treated as out-patient at Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore. A case was registered. A probe is underw ay.
