A 40-year-old farmer was murdered by his uncle in the farmland at Thattankuttai village near Gudiyatham town in Vellore on Thursday over a land dispute.
Police said the deceased was identified as B. Ramesh, a farmer in the village. He was living with his wife and two children and cultivating paddy in his four acre farmland.
Initial inquiry revealed that Ramesh and his paternal uncle N. Vinayagam, 82, a farmer and suspect, had a long-standing dispute on the boundary of their farmland. They used to quarrel over the issue regularly.
Police said the duo got into an argument on Thursday. The quarrel turned into a fight with both of them exchanging blows on each other. In a fit of rage, Vinayagam took a sickle and hacked his nephew to death.
Immediately, family members and neighbours rescued Ramesh and admitted him at Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore where doctors declared him dead. A case was registered by Gudiyatham Taluk police. Suspect Vinayagam was arrested. A probe is underway.
