The Coimbatore District Police (Rural) are searching for a building for the new police station that has been allotted at Neelambur.

District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan said the search for a suitable building started after the State government sanctioned a police station at Neelambur. The plan was to start the functioning of the station in a rented building till a suitable plot of land was allocated and a new building constructed.

An officer said that the Department was looking for a large private building with adequate space for offices, visitors area and vehicle parking facility.

A police station at Neelambur will be a big relief for the District Police in view of growth and population rise in the region, encompassing places including Neelambur, Muthugoundenpudur, Arasur and Mylampatti. Also, the region is connected by arterial Avinashi Road and L&T bypass of the Salem – Kochi highway. The region is also seeing a rise in the population of migrant workers, who are largely employed in industries and construction sectors.

According to the police, there has been a rise in crimes and road traffic accidents in the region. Neelambur town is also witnessing traffic block in peak hours, especially in the evening. A police station at Neelambur will reduce the burden of Sulur station, which is currently having a very vast jurisdiction.

Mr. Karthikeyan said that several police stations in the district, which were currently having sub-inspectors as the station house officers (SHO), would soon have inspectors as the SHOs.

Stations, including Chettipalayam, Thadagam, Kottur and two police stations in the Pollachi sub-division are among the stations that are expected to get inspectors as SHOs.
