Part-time teachers from schools across Tamil Nadu held a protest on Monday for the seventh consecutive day in Chennai demanding the regularisation of the jobs. There are over 12,000 part-time teachers who are employed in 7,000 government schools across in the State. “This has been a long-time demand. We have been requesting the regularisation of our jobs, a promise of the government for some time now. Every time we are given some reply. This time we want a resolute answer,” said V. Murgadoss, president, Tamil Nadu All Part-time Teachers Federation.
Part-time teachers were appointed to teach subjects such as Physical Education, Art, Tailoring, Horticulture, Computer Science and Life Sciences in government schools, to expose students to co-curricular activities. The part-time teachers were initially paid a monthly salary of ₹10,000. An additional ₹2,500 was sanctioned after widespread protests over the issue.
“We get no benefits and have only about 10 years of service left. Other States such as Kerala have been able to offer permanent posts to their teachers,” said another teacher. Over 100 teachers took part in the protest held in the city. They were detained by the police and released later in the day.
