A 28-year-old man from Thoothukudi district, who was accused in a murder case, was hacked to death by a gang near a police station in Salem on Tuesday (July 15, 2025).

M. Madhan Kumar, a resident of Thalamuthu Nagar in Thoothukudi, was arrested by the Thoothukudi North police in connection with the murder of a ship crew member, S. Maradona (30), in May this year. Later, he was released from prison on condition bail. As per his bail condition, he had to sign at the Hasthampatti police station in the morning and evening from July 10. He stayed in a lodge along with his wife, Monisha (25), in Salem to fulfil his bail conditions.

On Tuesday morning, he came to Hasthampatti police station along with his wife and signed the register. Later, they went to a restaurant near the police station. A six-member gang entered the restaurant and hacked Madhan Kumar using machetes. Shocked, his wife rushed to the police station. Before the police could reach the spot, the gang murdered Madhan Kumar and fled from the spot.

The police sent the body to Salem Government Hospital for postmortem. They alerted all the police stations in the city to conduct vehicle checks to nab the gang. The police are verifying CCTV footage in the locality to identify the gang.

A case was registered and four special teams were formed to nab the gang.

Monisha had claimed to the police that she had doubts on Maradona’s father and their relatives.
