A leopard attack has once again triggered fear among residents of Ongalwadi, near Hasanur, after a calf was killed and other cattle were grievously injured at a farm on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) night.

The cattle belonged to a local couple, Sadanandam and Paasamani, who discovered the dead calf on Wednesday (July 16) morning and immediately informed the Hasanur Forest Range office. A forest team inspected the spot and confirmed signs of leopard movement.

As news of the incident spread, fear gripped the residents of Hasanur, Ongalwadi, and Arepalayam — villages located close to the reserve forest areas. Locals said frequent leopard attacks on cattle over the past month have become a serious concern and urged the Forest Department to intensify patrolling and implement effective measures to prevent wild animals from straying into human settlements.

The Forest Department has issued warnings, urging residents to avoid venturing into farmlands during nighttime. They have also advised people not to take their livestock near the forest boundary.
