Mangaluru and neighbouring areas in Dakshina Kannada district in coastal Karnataka bore the brunt of heavy rain since July 16 night, with landslips reported on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, near Mangaluru International Airport, and the Circuit House at Bejai.

A landslip at Mannagundi in Kadaba taluk of Dakshina Kannada blocked movement of vehicles on Manglauru-Bengaluru National Highway 75. Police estimate that the debris will be removed after noon. Hence, Dakshina Kannada police have told motorists to use alternate routes to reach Bengaluru and Mangaluru.

Around 10.15 a.m., police allowed movement of vehicles after clearing debris in the middle of the four-lane highway.
A landslip was reported near the welcome arch of Mangaluru International Airport. Personnel from the airport and fire and emergency services were clearing the debris, which was blocking access to the road leading to the airport.

Another landslip at Moodukere, near the airport, blocked movement of vehicles on the Adyapady-Kaikamba road. Efforts were on to clear the debris, district officials said.

Vehicular movement between the Circuit House at Bejai and the Kadri Temple Road junction on the George Fernandes Road was affected by a landslip that blocked two lanes of the road from Bejai Circuit house to Kadri Temple Road junction. Vehicles were moving on the remaining two lanes, which is generally used for vehicles approaching the Circuit House from the junction, as efforts were being made to remove the debris.
Mangaluru city police sent messages in WhatsApp groups advising motorists to avoid using the stretch, and to use alternate routes to reach KSRTC bus stand and Kadri temple.
Water-logging was seen in several houses near the storm water drain off the Jeppu Kudpady-Jeppinamogaru Road. Vehicular movement on this busy road was affected. Water-logging was witnessed in the basement of commercial complexes in Kottara Chowki.

Maximum rainfall at Surathkal
In the 24 hours period ending at 8.30 a.m. on July 17, Surathkal recorded 296.6 mm rainfall, which was the highest in Karnataka. Tenka and Hejamady, both in Kapu taluk of Udupi district, recorded 277.5 mm and 271 mm, respectively. Bala, Mangaluru-B and Kotekar, all in Dakshina Kannada district, recorded 267 mm, 260 mm, 218.5 mm, respectively.
Belapu, Padubidri, Mudarangadi, all in Udupi district, recorded 211 mm, 207.5 mm and 204 mm, respectively.
Kinya and Yekkuru in Dakshina Kannada district recorded 208.5 mm and 206 mm, respectively in this period.
