Symposium held on scientific approach to crime investigation for police officers

A symposium on the theme ‘Crime Scene to Courtroom – a scientific path to justice’ was held for around 70 investigating officers of the Avadi Police Commissionerate at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai on Friday.

Additional Commissioner and Inspector General of Police, Avadi Commissionerate, K. Bhavaneeswari inaugurated the event. She stressed the need for coordination between investigating officers and post-mortem doctors to collect scientific evidence throughout the investigation. Vice Chancellor Uma Sekar said forensic science brought clarity to investigations and noted that officers ensured evidence was secured and presented in court.

Retired Deputy Director of the State Forensic Science Laboratory, Bhaskar, spoke on the collection and preservation of evidence. He referred to practices from the U.S. National Institute of Justice regarding documentation and packaging of evidence.

K. Tamilmani, Head of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Thanjavur Medical College, spoke on coordination between police and medical professionals during medico-legal autopsies. Public prosecutor K. P. Puratchidasan discussed the importance of timely and accurate police information for prosecution.
