Residents stopped road relaying work by Chennai Corporation in Padi Kuppam Road in ward 90, protesting against inadequate milling in the stretch.

Residents alleged that the GCC officials were trying to relay the road after many years without proper milling and have decided to intensify the struggle against shoddy implementation of road work which isan important residential stretch connecting Koyambedu market area with several parts of the city.

Boja Rajan, a resident, said the road relaying work has been disrupted for a week and residents have demanded GCC officials to implement the work after proper milling and stressed the need for relaying the stretch according to established norms to prevent flooding of homes.

“My house is lower than the road level because of shoddy road work in the past. I have to climb three steps to reach road level. Padi Kuppam Road is a bus route, and residential areas located along the road have reported several civic issues. Many of the residents are IT professionals, government employees, police, advocates and doctors, who have been struggling to get the civic issues resolved,” Chidambara Perumal Jayyavarapu, another resident, said.

Pointing to the flood risk along the road, Mr. Perumal said residents have been requesting better road design and proper implementation of road work. “Padi Kuppam Road is a 50 feet road developed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board which has been reduced in width because of encroachments. The road has been maintained by the Chennai Corporation. A wall-to-wall road project with proper footpaths was announced by GCC but the project was shelved. Of the 168 apartments in our residential complex, most of the owners have shifted,” he added.

Ward 90 councillor D.S.P.Rajagopal said he has requested officials to relay the road based on the demand of residents to resolve the civic issues. “The road has been damaged by heavy vehicles that carry vegetables, fruits and other commodities to Poonamallee High Road,” he said. “Over 10000 residents in the area have demanded proper milling and road relaying to prevent flooding of the homes,” he added.

After residents complained on social media about poor quality of road work, Chennai Corporation officials have assured that they will conduct a meeting with residents ahead of road relaying to resolve the issue.
