Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rakesh Singh was arrested in the wee hours of Wednesday (September 3, 2025) in connection with the alleged attack on Bidhan Bhawan, the office of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, less than a week ago.

A team of the Kolkata Police arrested him from PS Marvella, a private residence in Kolkata’s Tangra area, after a raid at around 2 p.m., a high-ranking official of the Kolkata Police said. He is likely to be produced in court today.

Mr. Singh had been absconding for five days. On August 29, a group of BJP supporters led by Mr Singh attacked Bidhan Bhawan, defaced posters of Rahul Gandhi and burnt tyres outside the office to protest against comments allegedly directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP leader had also livestreamed the incident.

Despite absconding, Mr. Singh remained active on social media, where he would be seen sharing videos and messages from unknown locations.

Mr Singh was arrested under sections of the Arms Act and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, as well as under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita including 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt using weapons), 351 (criminal intimidation), 324(2) (mischief) and others.

This development follows the arrest of his son, Shivam Singh in connection to the same incident.
