Red alert for coastal Karnataka till July 27

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued red alert (extremely heavy rainfall of over 204.5 m.m.) for coastal Karnataka till 8.30 a.m. on July 27.

It said that squally weather with wind speed 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely to prevail along and off Karnataka coast till July 26. Hence the IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during the period.

Udupi district received 51 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Two houses were partially damaged in the district during the period, according to the office of Udupi Deputy Commissioner.

30 electricity poles damaged

Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority said that 30 electricity poles and 11 transformers of MESCOM were damaged in the district. In addition, 24.83 km of rural roads and a house were damaged.

The district recorded 32 mm rainfall against the normal 40 mm rainfall during the period. The cumulative rainfall recorded in the district from January till date stood at 3,026 mm against the normal rainfall of 2,091 mm.
