Employees from the Revenue wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staged a protest in front of the corporation’s headquarters on Wednesday, demanding promotions, new recruitments and rationalisation of duties.

The agitation was more focussed on the removal of duties of collection of trade licence fee and advertisement fee from the job charts of bill collectors and tax inspectors. These responsibilities have been recently transferred from the Sanitation wing to the Revenue wing, in an attempt to consolidate the latter. Earlier, the trade license fee collection rested with the Assistant Medical Officers of Health.

Less than 100 bill collectors are taking care of the property tax collection in 343 dockets, a representation from the GHMC Revenue Employees Welfare Association to the Commissioner said, and urged the latter to post bill collectors in all circles in enough numbers. Promotions as Superintendent are also requested for those who have passed departmental exam.

While there are only 70 bill collectors who had been appointed to their posts, certain class IV employees with graduate degrees are also discharging the duties of the bill collectors, the representation noted, and urged the commissioners to promote them as bill collectors.

Petrol coupons should be provided to the bill collectors and tax inspectors as they cover 25-30 kilometres per day as part of their duties, the representation said, among other demands.
