Prime Minister Narenda Modi will inaugurate and dedicate three projects in southern districts at a function to be held in Thoothukudi on July 26.

The rail projects, costing ₹1,030 crore, will strengthen sustainable and efficient connectivity, according to a statement.

Among the projects to be inaugurated is the electrification of 90-km-long Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line, commissioned at a cost of ₹99 crore. It would promote eco-friendly transport and support tourism while benefiting regular commuters, farmers, students and small vendors in Madurai and Theni districts. Further, additional express train services can be introduced in the section, reducing travel time for passengers.

The Prime Minister would dedicate ₹650-crore doubling of the 21-km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section as part of Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari track doubling project. This will strengthen connectivity in the southern region.

The project has paved the way for operation of additional passenger and freight services and contributed to improved operational efficiency.

Further, the doubling of Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87 km) and Tirunelveli–Melapalayam (3.6 km) sections at a cost of ₹283 crore would reduce travel time on major southern routes like Chennai–Kanniyakumari and promote regional economic progress by improving passenger and freight capacity.
