₹25,000 fine imposed on trio for smuggling banned tobacco goods in train

Virudhunagar District Food Safety Designated Officer S. Mariappan imposed a fine of ₹25,000 on three persons who attempted to smuggle in 73 kg of banned tobacco products by a train on Thursday.

A team of Government Railway Police from Virudhunagar found that the tobacco goods were being smuggled by Bengaluru-Nagercoil express train at Virudhunagar.

They detained the trio, including M. Elango, and two juveniles, who were taking the contraband to Kovilpatti from Bengaluru.

Besides imposing the fine, the officials were probing as to who were behind the smuggling.
