The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ warning for the North Coastal Andhra Pradesh region and parts of other coastal districts for July 25 and 26 following the formation of a low pressure over the north Bay of Bengal.

As per its daily bulletin, the low pressure laid over central parts of north Bay of Bengal at 8.30 a.m. on July 24, Thursday (July 24, 2025), and the associated cyclonic circulation extended up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting south-westwards with height.

The IMD said it was likely to become a well marked low pressure area during the next 24 hours and likely to move west-north-westwards towards West Bengal and North Odisha coasts during the next 48 hours.

There was also a monsoon trough at the mean sea level that passes through Sri Ganganagar, Sirsa, Meerut, Hardoi, Patna, Jamshedpur, Digha, and thence south-eastwards to the centre of the low-pressure area.

Under the influence of the low pressure, the North Coastal Andhra Pradesh was likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain for the next three days until July 27. The South Coastal Andhra Pradesh was likely to receive heavy rain until July 26. Rayalseema might receive scattered rainfall, the bulletin said.

Thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and strong winds with speed of 40-50 kmph, were also likely across the three regions until July 28. As per the IMD forecast, there might be minimal rainfall activity in the State on July 28, 29, 30 and 31.

On July 25, Friday, widespread rainfall could be expected in the districts of Alluri Sitharama Raju, Srikakulam. Vizianagaram, Parvatipuram-Manyam, Anakapalli and Eluru. Other districts might receive “fairly widespread” rainfall.

On Thursday, while an orange alert was in place for a few coastal districts, many places in the State received moderate rainfall as of 7 p.m.

According to real-time information available with the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, the day’s maximum of 66 mm rainfall was recorded in Navagam of Parvatipuram- Manyam district.
