Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty said on Thursday (July 24, 2025) that a revision of the State’s electoral roll could unseat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and denied allegations that Bengali migrant workers were being attacked in other States.
“These are utter lies. Which Bengalis are being attacked? [Trinamool] is trying to secure its vote by inciting conflict… that is what the Chief Minister does; she instigates,” the BJP leader said, denying the Trinamool’s allegations that Bengali workers were being harassed in BJP-ruled States.
He added that he has worked in other States and has “never faced hostility for being Bengali.”
At the Martyrs’ Day programme on July 21 this year, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a “language movement” to protest against attacks on “Bengalis, the Bengali language, and bhasha santras (linguistic terrorism).”
SIR will topple Mamata
She had also stated that she would not allow revision of West Bengal’s electoral list, and that she would organise blockades of Constitutional offices if an SIR were carried out in the State.
“Those who came to West Bengal will be flagged and uprooted individually. The problem is particularly severe in West Bengal, which is why there is more noise here. [Trinamool] knows that if those who flocked to West Bengal are uprooted, they will not be able to win even 70 seats next year,” Mr. Chakraborty further said at an organisational meeting in Kolkata’s Chetla locality.
Responding to Mr. Chakraborty, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh asked where his “Bengali spirit” was.
“He says he is Bengali. Is his Bengali conscience dead? Did he pawn his spine to the BJP? What is happening to Bengali speakers across the country … Does speaking Bengali automatically make you Bangladeshi?… BJP is attacking West Bengal and the Bengali language. Does he not see it?” Mr. Ghosh said later on Thursday.
