A gang of three persons decamped with 15 kgs of silver, cash and gold after they broke into steel grill doors on the terrace of a two-storey jewellery showroom in Arani town in Tiruvannamalai on Saturday.

Police said that it was around 9.30 a.m when staff of the showroom noticed broken lockers and display panels in the outlet. Immediately, they informed showroom owner S. Perumal (38), a DMK functionary who rushed to the spot. Perumal’s wife P. Shanthi is former DMK Chairman of Polur panchayat union in Tiruvannamalai district.

Based on an alert, a large police team led by Tiruvannamalai SP M. Sudhakar inspected the spot including the terrace of the building, damaged lockers and display panels and CCTV cameras in the showroom.

Initial inquiry revealed that the showroom was inaugurated in December 2024 on busy Polur Main Road in Arani town. Police said that the burglars decamped with gold, silver and cash from the showroom. The gang also damaged CCTV cameras inside the showroom and fled with hard disk of the cameras.

Police said CCTV footage from a garment showroom opposite to Jewellery showroom showed, three masked persons entered the jewellery building around 10.30 p.m on Friday and left the premises around 3 a.m. Surrounded by buildings including a rice mill, the showroom does not have a security person.

The gang climbed on to the terrace through a small pathway near the showroom. They broke the grill doors on the terrace to get access to the showroom. They successfully managed to open lockers that contained silver bars and ornaments. They also looted gold and silver jewellery kept on display panels inside the showroom.

Police have collected CCTV footage from the garment showroom. Fingerprint experts were also roped in. Special teams have been formed to nab the suspects. A case has been registered by Arani Town police. A probe is underway.
