Following heavy rainfall in the catchment area of Koyna dam in Maharashtra, water release into the Koyna river course was increased on Sunday and it has, in turn, resulted in the authorities releasing more water from the Almatti reservoir in Bagalkot.
On Saturday, 18,665 cusecs of water was released into the Koyna river course and on Sunday, it was increased to 23,000 cusecs.
This development, coupled with heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area and discharge from the Krishna river (Kallol Barrage) and the Ghataprabha river (Lolasur Bridge), has resulted in further increase in inflow at the Almatti reservoir. Consequently, the authorities increased outflow from the Almatti dam to 1,20,000 cusecs at 8 a.m. on Sunday from 80,000 cusecs.
The authorities have issued a warning to people in the villages downstream of Almatti dam to be cautious in the wake of the increased discharge of water from the dam. Barrages in Belagavi district have already witnessed an increased inflow owing to incessant rainfall.
