Holding that the State government’s efforts to make alcohol easily accessible will endanger the family environment, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has urged the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government to revise its liquor policy.
In a social media post, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews stated that the earlier announcements by the LDF government regarding liquor policies have now been reduced to mere slogans serving market interests.
“When the first Pinarayi Vijayan government took office, there were only 29 bars in the State. But now, the number of liquor shops has nearly reached a thousand. The liquor policy has become nothing more than a mere line on paper,” he noted. Highlighting the fact that steps are being taken to deliver alcohol directly to homes, he warned that making alcohol easily available will seriously threaten the family environment.
