The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has cracked its whip against the illegal encroachments into the Musi river bed. On Tuesday, its teams swooped down on several establishments functioning after filling up the river bed, obstructing the flow.

Several encroachments starting from Chaderghat bridge up to the old Osmania General Hospital have been cleared up, majority of which were being used as parking for heavy vehicles including district buses. The river was being filled up and levelled before temporary sheds were constructed and leased out.

A statement from the HYDRAA identified the encroachers as Tikaram Singh, Poonamchand Yadav, and Jayakrishna who have encroached up to 7.62 acres of river bed among themselves. There was also a nursery being run from the location.

In another instance on the same day, HYDRAA forces have removed illegal structures from a park in Anjaneya Nagar of Moosapet.

As per the layout approved by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, 2000 square yards was the allotted land for the park, which is being attempted to be encroachment by a tent house owner who has his shop opposite the park. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Authority had earlier granted ₹50 lakh for development of the park, but attempts to build a compound wall were thwarted by the tent house owner. Local people who demanded a park there as per the layout, approached the police, GHMC and HYDRAA for resolution of the issue, a statement from HYDRAA said.
