Three men from Sulur surrendered before the police on Wednesday for murdering a 28-year-old man from Madurai and attempting to dispose of the corpse at Kangeyampalayam late on Tuesday. The accused have been identified as Ragupathy, 24, Muthukrishnan, 24, and Karan, 23, from places near Sulur.

According to the police, their friend Suresh Kumar, 28, from Madurai was found murdered in a vacant land on the side of an anaicut off Tiruchi Road at Kangeyampalayam on Wednesday. The body was found with partially burnt wooden logs and waste materials, which the accused lit in a bid to burn it.

The Sulur police launched an investigation after locals spotted the body on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, Ragupathy, Muthukrishnan, and Karan surrendered before the Sulur police around 12.30 p.m. and confessed to have murdered Kumar.

As per their statement, Kumar approached them in an inebriated state when they were consuming liquor near the anaicut around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. They claimed that Kumar demanded money to buy liquor, resulting in a brawl. The accused assaulted Kumar with an empty liquor bottle and he died on the spot. The accused attempted to dispose of the body by burning wooden logs and waste materials over it and left the spot, said the police.

As the deceased was known to the accused, they feared of getting caught and surrendered before the police. Sulur inspector Lenin Appadurai said the body was shifted to the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital for post-mortem.
