Nearly seven months after the Union Ministry of Education (MoE) shortlisted candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Badri Narayan Tiwari has been appointed to it. The MoE issued an order confirming Professor Tiwari’s appointment on Wednesday (July 30, 2025).

Over 120 persons had applied for the position; 10 candidates were shortlisted.

Prof. Tiwari, a cultural anthropologist and social historian, is the first V-C appointed by the MoE under its new regulations. TISS now comes under the Central government’s purview. The University Grants Commission’s (UGC) rules state the Centre will appoint the heads of deemed-to-be universities receiving over 50% of their funding from the government.

Prof. Tiwari was formerly heading the Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute in Prayagraj. Following his selection as V-C of TISS, the G.B. Pant Social Science Institute relieved him of his charge as its Director.

He holds an M.A. in Modern History, and Ph.D., from the University of Allahabad. He has been a Fellow at the University of Cambridge, U.K., and Senior Fulbright Fellow. He has authored multiple books, including Fascinating Hindutva: Saffron Politics and Dalit Mobilisation;Women Heroes and Dalit Assertion in North India; and Kanshiram: Leader of the Dalits. He was earlier associated with the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for the Study of Discrimination and Exclusion.

Prof. Tiwari’s appointment to the V-C’s post comes two years after Shalini Bharat, the previous V-C of TISS, retired in 2023, after completing her tenure of five years. Since then, the V-C’s post at TISS had remained vacant, with Manoj Tiwari, the V-C of the Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai, filling in as the acting V-C.
