Chennai Metrowater has warned consumers against fraudsters impersonating as officials asking for payment of pending water, sewer tax and charges.
This follows a recent increase in complaints regarding such scams. In a press release, the water agency has cautioned consumers against fraudsters tricking them as Metrowater employees, instructing them to remit outstanding water, sewer tax and charges via mobile number linked to private bank account through UPI services. They also threaten to disconnect services if payment is not made.
The water agency has asked residents to be vigilant of such calls from unauthorised persons. Residents may remit payment through its official website, https://bnc.chennaimetrowater.in/#/public/cus-login or in collection centres located in all 15 area offices and head office. They may also use the iPoS machines carried by Metrowater depot managers to pay the bills.
For UPI transactions, consumers may navigate to the utilities category under the bill payment option and choose CMWSSB for tax and charges payment. Residents contact the helpline 044-45674567 for any clarifications about pending tax and charges, the release said.
