A total of 21 corporators have submitted nominations for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Standing Committee elections scheduled for August 6.

In a last-minute decision, the Jana Sena Party (JSP) opted out of the contest, resulting in nine Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidates and one from the BJP filing nominations under the NDA banner. The JSP was supposed to file nominations for three seats, as finalised earlier. On the other hand, 10 corporators from the YSRCP have entered the fray.

From the BJP, its floor leader 48 Ward Corporator Gangula Kavitha filed her nomination. This is the first time a BJP corporator is vying for a position in the council. TDP Corporators who filed nominations include D. venkata Rameswara Rao (Ward 89), S Vasantha (Ward 97), Molli Hemalatha (Ward 5), M Chinathalli (Ward 84), G Lavanya (Ward 17), R Trivarnaprasad Rao (Ward 93), R Srinivasa Rao (Ward 79), Molli Muthyalu (Ward 88), Konathala Neelima (80).

‘Rebel’ in JSP camp

In a surprising twist, a former YSRCP corporator Mohammed Sadiq, now with the JSP, has filed a nomination defying the JSP high command’s directive.

Similarly, U Ramachandra Rao (Ward 70), Md. Imran (Ward 66), KVN Sasikala (Ward 55), R Venkata Ramana (Ward 51), K Poornima (Ward 41), G Nageswara Rao (40), Bipin Jain (Ward 31), P Appalakonda (Ward 28), S Padma Reddy (24) and N Lakshmi (Ward 20) have filed the nominations from the YSRCP.

Both the YSRCP and the NDA have been holding meetings to strategise and secure victory in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, sources from the Jana Sena Party (JSP) revealed that the party has requested Md. Sadiq to withdraw his nomination.

In the latest development, 11 corporators who recently moved from the YSRCP to the JSP have submitted a representation to JSP MLA Ch. Vamsikrishna Srinivasa, raising concerns about the current Floor Leader, who is from JSP.

As per their representation, they followed the high command’s directive and supported Deputy Mayor D. Govinda Rao, who is also from JSP, during the voting. However, the corporators now demand the appointment of a new Floor Leader from among the 11 YSRCP leaders who moved to the JSP. They cited a lack of leadership and coordination skills in the current Floor Leader to effectively represent them in the council.
