Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi has refuted the allegations of sexual exploitation levied against him by an X user a few days ago. The tweets, deleted within hours, had detailed how a young woman was allegedly ‘used’ by Vijay for ‘caravan favours.’
In an interview with Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday (July 30), Vijay categorically denied the allegations, calling them a work of a jealous attention-seeker who wishes to tarnish his name. The actor stated that the ‘filthy’ accusations have hurt his family and friends. “Anyone who knows me even remotely will laugh at this. I know myself too. This kind of filthy accusation can’t upset me. My family and close friends are upset, but I tell them, ‘Let it slide. This woman is obviously doing it to be noticed. She has her few minutes of fame, let her enjoy it,’” said Vijay.
Stating that he has filed a cybercrime complaint against the X user, Vijay added that he cannot let smear campaigns pull him down. “I’ve faced all kinds of whispering campaigns for seven years. Such targeting has not affected me so far. It never will,” he said.
Vijay speculated if these allegations were levied to damage his new film, Thalaivan Thalaivii, which has been performing well in the theatres. “My new film is doing well. Probably, some jealous elements think that by tarnishing me, they can damage my film. It doesn’t work that way. In today’s day and age, anyone can say anything about anybody. There are no filters. All you need is an account on social media, and you can write what you like without fear of repercussion,” he added in his chat with Deccan Chronicle.
For the unversed, in the wee hours on Monday (July 28), a X user named Ramya Mohan posted a tweet that triggered a major controversy. The user claimed that Vijay Sethupathi sexually exploited a girl she knew and that ‘the drug sex-nexus’ in Kollywood is real.
Another tweet read, “It’s insane how some insensitive morons are more focused on questioning the source or blaming the victim than actually acknowledging the truth. This truth hit the family like a storm when they went through her diary and phone chats. This wasn’t just some story. This was her life, her pain…”
The tweets were deleted shortly later, and the X handle ‘@_Ramya_mohan_’ currently stands deactivated as well.
