The Tamil Nadu government has decided to constitute a committee that would look into a representation seeking to simplify procedures to obtain trade and business licences in village panchayats.

Based on the recommendations by the committee, the government would decide on implementing rules notified in this regard, Minister for Rural Development I. Periyasamy said in a statement.

The decision to constitute the committee with officials and representatives from the traders community followed a representation submitted by the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday.

“The DMK government will always stand by the poor and the downtrodden and especially the traders,” Mr. Periyasamy said. He also rejected contentions made by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami in this regard.

It may be recalled, the State government had recently notified the Tamil Nadu Village Panchayats (Grant of Trade or Business Licence) Rules, 2025. The rules sought to revise certain procedures that were being adopted at the village panchayat level across the State. Though there were procedures for several years, appropriate rules were not in place in this regard and village panchayats were adopting resolutions to decide on the fee for granting licence for various trade and businesses. A legislation seeking an amendment was adopted in the Assembly to amend the nomenclature of ‘dangerous and offensive trade licence’ should be changed to ‘trade licence’ following a recommendation of the Sixth Finance Commission.
