A tusker died after falling into an agricultural well near Chadivayal in Coimbatore district early on Thursday (July 31, 2025).

The incident occurred in the farm belonging to a woman named Nirmala at Solaipadugai near Chadivayal in the district around 3 a.m., when frontline staff were monitoring wild elephants. The area falls within the jurisdiction of Mullangadu beat in Vellapathy section of Boluvampatti forest range.

Sources from the village said that three elephants, including the tusker that died, entered agricultural lands at Solaipadugai on Wednesday (July 30) night. Two of them returned to the forest after being driven out by the frontline staff of the department.

However, the tusker continued to move between farms and fell into an agricultural well. It drowned before the forest officials could launch rescue efforts.

The carcass of the elephant was pulled out from the well using a crane. Villagers thronged the place in large numbers after hearing about the elephant’s death. Officials said that a post-mortem examination will be performed.
