Officials from the Food Safety and the Legal Metrology departments conducted simultaneous raids on 40 hotels and restaurants across various parts of the city on Friday. The operation involved around 20 teams, particularly focused on checking compliance with food safety standards.
The teams found that several food zones, including well known restaurants, were blatantly using extensive food colours, storing stalled food etc. During the inspections, officials examined kitchen areas, food storage practices, cleanliness in the kitchens and hygiene conditions. They collected 42 food samples from different food zones, which are were sent to labs for further testing.
Joint Food Controller N. Poornachandra Rao said that several hotels were issued notices for failing to maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness. In addition, 17 cases were registered against food zones which were found storing spoiled food in the refrigerators. He also said that criminal charges would be slapped after the test results of the food samples are out.
âFood zones which were issued notices, should improve the hygiene conditions. If not, strict action will be initiated against the restaurants, including possibility of closure,â he warned. He said that these raids will continue.
