Six policemen attached to the Kumbla police station in Kasaragod, Kerala, have been suspended for allegedly leaking operational details to the sand mafia. District Police Chief Y.B. Vijay Bharat Reddy issued the suspension order on Tuesday following a preliminary investigation.

The suspended officers include senior civil police officers P.M. Abdul Salam, A.K. Vinod Kumar, and Linesh, civil police officers A.M. Manu and M.K. Anoop and police vehicle driver Krishna Prasad. Of these, five were serving at the Kumbla station, while one had already been transferred to another station.

The probe began after the police arrested a tipper lorry driver, Moideen, a month ago for sand smuggling. Inspection of his mobile phone revealed contacts and messages linking the accused to the policemen.

Investigators found that accurate details were being relayed by the accused officers to mafia networks through WhatsApp and phone calls.

Kumbla Station House Officer Sreejesh reported the findings to Kasaragod DySP C.K. Sunil Kumar, who forwarded it to the District Police Chief. With prima-facie evidence established, the officers were placed under suspension.
